No temporary visa counts towards the permanent residence requirement, however long you have held it. The route runs temporary visa, then permanent residence, then citizenship.
Your time in Australia is not wasted. Lawful residence on temporary visas counts towards the four years citizenship requires, so you may be close once you become a permanent resident.
If you hold a retirement visa (subclass 405 or 410), those visas are closed to new applicants, but holders have a route to permanent residence through the Parent (subclass 103) and Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visas, with places set aside for them.
