Naturalisation is built on residence in Brazil, and the clock only runs while you hold a residence permit and are actually living there. From outside the country there is nothing to apply for, so this is the wrong door — but it is the second door, not the first.
The first is a residence permit, and Brazil has more routes to one than most countries: remote work for a foreign employer, a pension paid from abroad, investment in a Brazilian company or in property, a job offer from a Brazilian employer, a Brazilian spouse or partner, or — for nationals of most South American countries — a residence agreement that needs no job offer at all. What is worth knowing now is how much the starting point changes the wait. Four years of residence is the ordinary rule. It drops to one year if you are married to or partnered with a Brazilian, or have a Brazilian child, and one year is also all that is asked of nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries. So the residence route you pick decides how long the citizenship takes.
