Citizenship by Descent in Colombia

The Verdict: Unlikely

A great-grandparent or earlier ancestor does not give you Colombian nationality by themselves. It works only if every generation between you and them registered as Colombian in their own lifetime.

Colombian nationality passes from parent to child, one registration at a time. A grandparent born abroad to your Colombian ancestor would have had to register, then your parent, then you. Most families in this position have a generation who never registered, and a generation who died unregistered breaks the line for good.

Check your living relatives: if your grandparent and parent are both alive, they can each register in turn, starting with the oldest, and then you can follow. If your parent or grandparent was born in Colombia, they were Colombian already, so restart this quiz with them.

If the line is broken, our Skilled Migration, Retirement, Golden Visa and Digital Nomad quizzes for Colombia cover the residence visas.
