Retirement in Croatia

The Verdict: Not eligible

You do not need a retirement permit: as an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen you can already live in Croatia. If you stay over three months, register your residence with the local police administration.

For someone not working, registration asks for enough means for you and any family with you, and comprehensive health insurance. You receive a registration certificate.

If you draw a pension from another EU or EEA state, your healthcare entitlement generally travels with you under the EU coordination rules. Ask your own pension authority for an S1 form and register it with the Croatian health insurance fund on arrival.

After five years of continuous residence you can apply for permanent residence. You can buy property on the same terms as Croatian citizens.
