Citizenship by Descent in Egypt

The Verdict: Not eligible

Your family's years in Egypt do not give you a claim by descent, because living or being born there never made anyone Egyptian. Look at naturalisation or the residence routes instead.

Egyptian nationality passes through an Egyptian parent. Many Greek, Italian, British, French, Armenian, Levantine and Jewish families who lived in Egypt for generations held another nationality, or none.

Egypt has no return law for families who left in the 1950s and 1960s. If a relative did hold Egyptian nationality, take this quiz again and choose that relative. If they lost it on leaving, Article 18 lets the Interior Minister restore it to that person while they are alive, but not to their descendants.

If you were born in Egypt yourself, our naturalisation quiz covers the shorter routes for people born there. Otherwise our golden visa, retirement and skilled migration quizzes cover living in Egypt through property, a deposit, a pension or work.
