Second Pass

Citizenship by Descent in France

The Verdict: Not eligible

Without a French parent or ancestor, the descent route is not open to you. Look at our marriage quiz if your spouse is French, or at naturalisation after five years in France.

French nationality by descent passes only through family who were French when the next generation was born.

The spouse of a French citizen can claim nationality by declaration after four or five years of marriage. Otherwise the usual path is to move to France on a work, business, study or visitor permit and naturalise after five years, or two after two years of higher education in France.

Our skilled migration and retirement quizzes cover the permits that get you there.
