The Verdict: Clear Path
You can apply for France's visitor card as a remote employee of a foreign employer. Start with a long-stay visitor visa application on france-visas.gouv.fr.
France has no digital nomad visa. In June 2026 the Interior Ministry said, in a published answer to a parliamentary question, that someone living in France and working remotely for an employer abroad, paid and taxed at home, counts as not working in France and should use the visitor card.
The test: your own resources must be at least the net minimum wage, currently €1,477.93 a month, which you have told us you meet. You also need health insurance for the whole stay and a signed undertaking not to work in France, which on the ministry's reading your remote job does not breach.
Bring your employment contract and payslips, a letter from your employer confirming you work remotely and are paid abroad, proof of accommodation and insurance. Validate the visa online (ANEF) within three months of arrival. The card is renewed every year.
Take tax advice before you go. Living in France for most of the year usually makes you a French tax resident, and the tax administration's view of work done in France has not been reconciled with the ministry's answer.
After five years you can apply for the ten-year resident card, with French at B1 and the civic exam.
