Naturalization in France

The Verdict: Not eligible

Naturalisation is only for people who live in France, so it is not open to you from abroad. Check our descent and marriage quizzes first, then the permits that let you move.

Article 21-16 of the Civil Code requires residence in France when the decree is signed, and article 21-17 requires five years of habitual residence before applying.

Descent and marriage can both be claimed without living in France. Otherwise our skilled migration, exceptional talent, golden visa and retirement quizzes cover the permits people use to move, and time on most of them counts towards the five years.
