Historical Displacement in Greece

The Verdict: Not eligible

Greece has no restoration route for families displaced by the occupation, the civil war or political exile. But your family may never have lost Greek nationality: take our Citizenship by Descent quiz.

Greek restoration laws are specific: article 13 of Law 4018/2011 for Greek Jews, and articles 22 and 23 of the Citizenship Code for a woman who lost nationality by marrying a foreigner and a child who lost it on recognition by a foreign father. Nothing covers civil war displacement. Post-war repatriation was framed around Greek ethnic origin and left out groups such as the Slav-speaking refugees from Greek Macedonia.

Leaving Greece, or naturalising elsewhere, did not end Greek nationality without the Minister's permission. So the displaced person, and their children, may still be Greek. Our Reacquiring Lost Citizenship quiz covers losses that were recorded.

If the line is broken, naturalisation as a person of Greek origin living abroad does not care how the family left. Our Diaspora and Religious Return quiz covers it.
