Marriage in Greece

The Verdict: Need More Info

Your naturalisation clock has not started, because only lawful residence counts. Apply now for a residence permit as the spouse of a Greek citizen, or complete your EU registration.

Article 5(1)(d) of the Citizenship Code asks for seven continuous years of lawful residence, or three for EU citizens and for spouses with a Greek child together. Time in Greece without a permit counts for nothing.

As the spouse or registered partner of a Greek citizen, including in a same-sex couple, you can get a family member card of up to five years under the Immigration and Social Integration Code, as amended by Law 5275/2026. It lets you work.

You will need your marriage or partnership certificate, apostilled and translated, your passport, a criminal record certificate, health insurance and proof of accommodation.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no permit, but should complete the EU citizen registration, because that is what proves the years.
