Marriage in Greece

The Verdict: Need More Info

There is no Greek nationality for a spouse living abroad: every route runs through years of living in Greece. If you might move, the first step is a residence permit as the spouse of a Greek citizen.

Greece has no declaration or consular grant for spouses, however long the marriage. Article 5(1)(d) of the Citizenship Code asks for seven continuous years of lawful residence in Greece, or three for EU citizens and for spouses with a Greek child together.

If you move, the sequence is a family reunification visa and permit under the Immigration and Social Integration Code as amended by Law 5275/2026, then three or seven unbroken years, then the PEGP exam in Greek language and civics, then the application.

If your wife is Greek and lost her nationality by marrying a foreigner before 1984, she can reacquire it by declaration under article 22, with no residence needed. Our Reacquiring Lost Citizenship quiz covers it.
