Second Pass

Marriage in Greece

The Verdict: Need More Info

In Greece the wedding itself gives no nationality. What counts is years living lawfully in Greece, and having a child with your Greek partner cuts the wait from seven years to three.

Article 5(1)(d) of the Citizenship Code asks for seven continuous years of lawful residence. It falls to three for EU citizens, for a spouse of a Greek citizen who has a child with them, and for anyone with parental responsibility for a Greek child. A spouse alone waits seven.

Marriage, or a registered partnership (symfono symviosis), does give you the right to live and work in Greece. Spouses and registered partners of Greek citizens, including same-sex couples, get a family member card of up to five years under the Immigration and Social Integration Code as amended by Law 5275/2026.

If a Greek passport is the goal, start the residence clock as early as you can, and take this quiz again once you are married or registered.
