Naturalization in Greece

Find out which of your years count as lawful residence for naturalisation. Take your full permit history to the Directorate of Nationality for your region and ask them to confirm it.

Article 5(1)(d) of the Citizenship Code counts lawful residence only. Time as a diplomat or administrative official of a foreign state never counts. Student permits are generally not counted, and time while an asylum claim was pending may or may not be, depending on how it ended. A golden visa counts only for time actually lived in Greece.

List every residence card and renewal decision with its category and dates. Settle this before you spend on the PEGP exam and the file: a refusal on residence costs a year, because article 8 bars a new application for a year after a rejection.
