Second Pass

Reacquiring Lost Citizenship in Greece

The Verdict: Need More Info

Find out which loss event, if any, is on record; often none is. Ask the Greek consulate, or the Directorate of Nationality for the municipality the person was registered in, to search the record.

Greek nationality was hard to lose by accident. Naturalising abroad, leaving Greece, skipping military service or letting a passport lapse did not end it.

The events that did end it each left a record:

Release by ministerial permission on taking a foreign nationality (article 16).

Renunciation before a Greek consul (article 18).

A woman marrying a foreigner before 1984, now reversible by declaration (article 22).

Recognition of a child by a foreign father, also reversible by declaration (article 23).

Revocation (article 17), which is rare, or a declaration under article 19 of the 1955 Code between 1955 and 1998.

If nothing is found, nothing happened, and what you need is a determination of citizenship. Take the quiz again once you know.
