Retirement in Greece

The Verdict: Not eligible

The retirement permit is for passive income only and forbids work in Greece, so it does not fit while you keep working. Remote work for foreign clients points to our Digital Nomad quiz; work for Greek employers to Skilled Migration.

The financially independent person permit needs at least €3,500 net a month of pension, rent, dividends or interest from abroad. Earned income does not count.

The digital nomad permit uses the same €3,500 threshold for income earned remotely from outside Greece. Since 5 February 2026 you must apply at a Greek consulate before you travel.

Work for Greek employers or clients needs a work permit: an employer-sponsored single permit for three years, renewable for five.

Once the work stops and your passive income alone reaches the threshold, this permit opens up.
