The Verdict: Need More Info
As the spouse or civil partner of an Irish citizen, or of an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen living in Ireland, you may not need the Stamp 0 retirement permission at all. Apply instead through your spouse, which gives a Stamp 4 that lets you use public services and counts towards citizenship.
If your spouse is Irish, the immigration service's spouse scheme applies. It has its own means test: for an application made from outside Ireland, your Irish spouse must have earned €40,000 over the last three years, above any State benefits. An application from inside Ireland needs evidence of your financial means.
If your spouse is an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen and is self-sufficient in Ireland, with enough resources and sickness insurance, you can apply for a residence card as their family member, marked 4 EU FAM. No fixed figure is published for those resources. This route is not open to the family of an Irish citizen unless the couple lived in another EU country under free movement first.
If neither fits, the Stamp 0 test of €50,000 a year per person applies to you. Marriage to an Irish citizen also opens a shorter route to citizenship: three years of marriage and three of the last five years on the island.
