Italy now asks for a close link to Italy on top of the bloodline. Which of these is true for you?

Since 24 May 2025 descent alone is not enough for anyone born outside Italy — one of these has to hold. Watch the timing on the first: it is judged on the day you were born, or on the day that relative died if they died before you were born. So a grandfather who took another passport after your birth still counts as Italian-only. Someone born in the US, Brazil, Argentina or Canada held that country's citizenship from birth and never does; the same goes for Australia, but only for births there before 20 August 1986. On the second, the two years have to fall after that parent became Italian, which only bites if they were naturalised rather than Italian from birth.
