This route runs entirely through an ancestor who was an Italian citizen living in the ceded territories, so without Italian ancestry there is no version of it that works. Nothing else in it can substitute — not residence, not investment, not marriage to someone who qualifies.
So that is a clean no, and it is better to have it in one screen than after five questions.
What Italy does offer someone without Italian ancestry: naturalisation after ten years of registered legal residence, or four if you hold another EU citizenship; citizenship through marriage to an Italian citizen, which is two years if you live in Italy and three years from the wedding if you do not; and, if the aim is to get there and start counting, the digital nomad permit, which has been accepting applications since March 2026, needs no Italian employer, and produces time that counts towards the rest.
If what you are really after is an EU citizenship rather than an Italian one specifically, that is a different and much wider question — several countries recognise descent further back than Italy now does, and a few have routes Italy has never had.
