This route is closed, and it closes cleanly: citizenship by marriage exists only where the other spouse is an Italian citizen. There is no version of it that works through a partner with no Italian connection, and no waiting period that changes that.
What is worth two minutes instead. Italy has routes that do not depend on your marriage at all. If you have Italian ancestry of your own, that is the descent route. If you would live in Italy, ordinary naturalisation is ten years of registered residence — or two, if a parent or grandparent of yours was an Italian citizen by birth. If you work remotely for people outside Italy, the digital nomad permit has been running since March 2026 and the time on it counts towards both.
And if it is the EU rather than Italy specifically that you are after, tell us — your spouse's family may have a claim somewhere else in Europe, and several countries still recognise descent further back than Italy now does.
