This route needs your spouse to be an Italian citizen already — so the first question is not about you, it is about them.
Plenty of people are entitled to Italian citizenship and have never had it recognised. If that is your spouse, the order matters: they get recognised first, and only then does the clock on your own application start. Doing it the other way round is not possible.
What has changed, and why this is worth checking now rather than assuming. Since 24 May 2025 descent alone is no longer enough for someone born outside Italy — Italy also asks for a close link, which in most cases means a parent or grandparent who held Italian citizenship and no other nationality on the day they were born. That closed the door on a lot of people, and it is why a family assumption that "we could get it if we wanted" may no longer hold. It is also why the answer is worth getting now rather than in five years.
