The shortest term Italy offers is two years, and it is narrow — it is for someone whose parent or grandparent is, or was, an Italian citizen by birth. If that is you, you are already counting towards it and you should know the date. Everyone else is on three years if they were born in Italy, four as an EU citizen, five as a recognised refugee or stateless person, and ten otherwise.
What resets the clock, which matters more than what starts it: a break in your registration with the comune. Deregistering, a move that is not properly recorded, or a long absence that costs you your residence does not pause the count, it restarts it from zero. If you are planning a move between comuni or a spell out of the country, get the timing checked before rather than after.
Worth ruling out now rather than in eight years. If a parent or grandparent was an Italian citizen by birth, you may have a claim by descent that does not require living in Italy at all — a different and much better application, and one that has become harder to make since 2025, so the answer is worth having early.
Whatever the term, three things are required of everyone and all three are worth starting early. A B1 Italian certificate from one of the four recognised providers — a real exam, with sittings that book out. Proof of adequate income across the three years before you apply. And a clean record, with certificates from Italy and from every country you have lived in as an adult. Those last ones expire, so they come last; the language certificate does not, so it comes first.
And one thing that is not a requirement but decides most cases: continuity. What counts is unbroken registration with a comune. A gap — a year deregistered, a move handled badly, a period nobody recorded — does not pause the clock, it restarts it.
