Italian naturalisation is a concession rather than a right — it is granted by presidential decree on the Interior Ministry's proposal, and the Ministry has discretion. In practice that discretion bites on documents and income rather than on judgement calls, but it means nobody can promise you a grant, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
What the file needs: proof of continuous registered residence across the whole period, income across the three years before you apply, criminal record certificates from Italy and from each country you have lived in as an adult, your birth certificate legalised or apostilled and translated, and a B1 Italian certificate from one of the four recognised providers.
The decision window is twenty-four months from filing, extendable to thirty-six. That is the part nobody can speed up, which is an argument for filing as soon as the file is complete rather than waiting for a better moment.
One thing to check before you start ordering documents: whether a parent or grandparent of yours was an Italian citizen by birth. If so you have been eligible for years rather than months, and more usefully it may mean you had a claim by descent all along. That is worth ruling in or out first, because it is a different and better application.
