Italy — Skilled Migration

Possible

The route exists, and it starts somewhere other than where you are: with an Italian employer who wants to hire you. There is no job-seeker visa for skilled workers, and no way to be in Italy lawfully while you look.

How the system actually works, because it shapes how you should job-hunt. Almost every employment route is employer-driven — the employer applies for the authorisation, not you. For graduate-level roles at a reasonable salary, the EU Blue Card sits outside the annual quota and can move quickly, which makes it the one to aim for. For roles that do not meet that bar, the application goes through the decreto flussi: a fixed national allocation, released on click days, where employers file at a set moment and places run out. The 2026 to 2028 allocation runs to just under half a million entries across three years, so it is not small, but it is a queue with a starting gun.

What that means for you. An Italian employer hiring a non-EU national from abroad takes on paperwork and, outside the Blue Card, timing risk tied to a click day. Employers who have done it before are dramatically easier to convert than employers who have not, so target companies that already employ non-EU staff, multinationals with an Italian entity, and sectors that hire internationally as a matter of course. And knowing which route your role would use — and being able to say so — genuinely helps, because the employer's first instinct is often that it is impossible.

One route that inverts all of this and is worth checking first. If your work could be done remotely for clients or an employer outside Italy, the digital nomad permit needs no Italian employer, no sponsorship and no quota place. It has been open to applications since March 2026. For a lot of people looking for Italian jobs, that is the faster door by a wide margin.

And worth ruling out because it beats everything here: if you have Italian or other European ancestry, a claim by descent removes the need for permission altogether.

Tell us what you do, what you would expect to earn, and whether the work could be done remotely. We will tell you which route fits and what to say to an employer.
