There is no route of that kind, and we would rather tell you now than let you look for one.
Italy has no points system, no skilled occupation list, no expression-of-interest pool and no self-sponsored work permit. There is no application in which you submit your qualifications, experience, age and language ability and are assessed on them. This is a genuine structural difference from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and it catches people out because the search terms are the same everywhere while the systems are not.
What Italy assesses is a job or a business — never the person in the abstract. Every employment route starts with an Italian employer who wants to hire you, or with a business you are setting up. Merit matters enormously to whether you get the offer; it does nothing on its own.
So the honest reframing: the work to do is finding the employer, not finding the visa. Once an offer exists, the routes are real and some are fast — the EU Blue Card, for graduate-level roles at a reasonable salary, sits outside the annual quota.
The exceptions, such as they are, and why they are not what you are looking for. Italy grants citizenship for eminent services to the country, but the procedure cannot be started by the person concerned — it requires a proposal from an institution — so it is not an application anyone can make. Renowned artists have a named self-employment category, but it still requires an engagement and sits inside a small annual quota. Researchers, professors and intra-company transferees have routes outside the quota, but each needs an Italian institution or employer first.
The two routes that genuinely do not require an Italian employer. Remote work for clients or an employer outside Italy, under the digital nomad permit, which has been open since March 2026. And starting a business — the self-employment route or the innovative start-up route, both of which assess the venture rather than your CV.
And the one that beats all of it if it applies: European ancestry. Descent needs no permission from anyone. Tell us where your family is from and we will tell you whether it is worth pursuing.
