The Verdict: Not eligible
Japan has no golden visa and no citizenship by investment, and never has. Look at the business route in this quiz, or our Retirement route for Japan if you only want a long stay.
No residence is granted for property, bonds, deposits or any passive investment, and citizenship cannot be bought or gained by donation. The only exception to the ordinary naturalisation rules, for special distinguished service, needs approval by the Diet and is essentially never used.
Japan grants residence for running a business, not funding one. Since 16 October 2025 the Business Manager status needs ¥30 million in capital, at least one full-time employee who is Japanese or otherwise settled (permanent resident, spouse or child of a Japanese national, long-term resident), three years of management or CxO experience or a relevant master's degree, the ability to run the business in Japanese at about B2, and a business plan confirmed by a professional.
Citizenship comes by descent or by naturalising after years living in Japan (the Ministry of Justice has expected ten since April 2026) and giving up your current nationality.
