The Verdict: Not eligible
Japan has no retirement visa, so there is no way to settle there on a pension or savings alone. Look at our Marriage and Diaspora & Religious Return routes for Japan if your family has a link to Japan.
No status is granted for a pension, foreign income, savings, property or age, and nothing is pending. The only status for living in Japan on your own means is Designated Activities No. 40, the long stay for sightseeing and recreation: six months, extendable once to one year, then it ends. No work of any kind is allowed and there is no conversion to another status.
Repeated 90-day visa-free visits are not a substitute: immigration treats back-to-back stays as living in Japan without status and refuses entry over it.
The ways older people actually settle in Japan exist for other reasons: marriage to a Japanese national, Japanese ancestry within three generations, a child who is Japanese, or a real business (¥30 million capital since October 2025). Our Marriage, Diaspora & Religious Return and Golden Visa routes for Japan cover them.
