Marriage in Mexico

Your spouse needs to claim their Mexican nationality first, which is usually a registration, not an application. Once they hold proof, your own two years of living together in Mexico can be assessed.

How they claim it depends on the link. Born in Mexico: a certified copy of their Mexican birth certificate, or a late registration if the birth was never recorded. A parent born in Mexico: a consular birth registration. A grandparent or earlier: a consular registration after each generation above them is registered, which is less settled for people born before 18 May 2021.

Nationality by birth is held from birth, so your time living together in Mexico should count once it is documented. Keep your residence continuous while the paperwork runs.

Marriage shortens the residence period and nothing else. You still sit the foreign ministry's exam on Spanish, Mexican history and civic culture, and make the formal renunciation of your other nationality, which is asked for only once the ministry has decided to grant.
