Marriage in Mexico

The Verdict: Need More Info

There is an exception for spouses of people posted abroad by the Mexican government, and it turns on the posting. Get the official document of your spouse's assignment, then ask the consulate or the foreign ministry to accept an application.

The exception lifts only the need for your home to be in Mexico. You still need two years of living together, and the posting must be service for the Mexican state, such as a diplomatic or official assignment.

We found no guidance on how widely the ministry reads the exception, so expect to explain the basis rather than have it recognised automatically.

Marriage shortens the residence period and nothing else. You still sit the foreign ministry's exam on Spanish, Mexican history and civic culture, and make the formal renunciation of your other nationality, which is asked for only once the ministry has decided to grant.
