Second Pass

Reacquiring Lost Citizenship in Mexico

The Verdict: Unlikely

There is no recovery route for nationality held by naturalisation, so you would normally have to naturalise again. First check that you really were naturalised, and whether a loss was ever formally decided.

Nationality by naturalisation is lost by taking another nationality, using a foreign passport, presenting yourself as a foreigner in a public document, or living five continuous years abroad. A carta can also be annulled or revoked. The recovery provision covers only Mexicans by birth.

Two things could change the answer. If you were born abroad to a Mexican parent, you are Mexican by birth even if you were registered late at a consulate, and you have lost nothing. And loss, annulment and revocation each need a procedure in which you are heard first; if one is still open, that hearing is where this is decided.

If the loss is final, a new naturalisation runs on residence from the start under the ordinary rules, which the naturalisation quiz covers. An annulment on the file will weigh on that application.

Your children who are Mexican by birth keep their nationality whatever happens to yours.
