Skilled Migration in Mexico

The Verdict: Need More Info

If your salary stays abroad, residence on economic solvency fits you better than a work permit. It turns on your finances: check the income or savings figure your consulate publishes.

The government's own description of this residence names people transferred to a Mexican company whose pay continues to come from abroad.

It is assessed on monthly income over the last six months, or an average balance over the last twelve. There is no national figure; each consulate publishes its own. If the Mexican entity will pay you, even partly, you need a work-authorised residence through a registered employer instead.

Apply at the Mexican consulate for your country of nationality or habitual residence before you travel, and exchange the visa for a residence card at the immigration institute (INM) within 30 days of arriving.

Temporary residence runs up to four years, then converts to permanent residence. Naturalisation follows after five years of residence, or two if you are a national of a Latin American country, Spain or Portugal.
