Working Holiday Visa in Mexico

The Verdict: Clear Path

You can apply for Mexico's working holiday visa as a New Zealander aged 18 to 30. Book an in-person appointment at the Embassy of Mexico in Wellington through citas.sre.gob.mx.

The visa gives one year in Mexico with permission to work, but no more than three months with the same employer. You may take one course of up to three months, and you cannot bring dependants.

Bring a valid passport, one colour photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm), a quote for comprehensive medical insurance valid for a year from entry, and proof of funds: three months of bank statements or payslips showing NZD 1,500 a month, or a credit card statement showing a NZD 2,000 limit.

The visa is only an entry document. Within 30 days of arriving you must exchange it at the immigration institute (INM) for a temporary resident card valid for the year, or you fall out of status.

The year does not lead to settlement on its own, but it puts you in Mexico with the right to work. Converting to work-authorised residence through a registered employer is the usual next step.
