Citizenship by Descent in Morocco

The Verdict: Not eligible

Being born or living in Morocco does not make a family Moroccan, so there is no claim by descent here. Check the nationality your family did hold, such as French or Spanish, for a descent claim.

Moroccan nationality passes only through a Moroccan parent. Families of French, Spanish or other nationality living in Morocco, including under the protectorate before 1956, kept their own nationality.

Two narrow exceptions exist for people who live in Morocco now. Someone born and living there whose father was also born there, and belongs to the Arabic-speaking or Muslim community of a country where that community is the majority, can declare for Moroccan nationality at any age. A child born in Morocco to foreign parents who were themselves born there after 1958 can declare in the two years before turning 18.

To live in Morocco, the routes are residence through work, a business or your own income, then naturalisation after five years. Our Morocco skilled migration, golden visa and retirement quizzes cover them.
