Naturalization in Morocco

The Verdict: Unlikely

Time in Morocco without a residence card does not count towards naturalisation, so getting lawful residence comes first. The five years start from the day you hold a card.

Article 11 of the Nationality Code requires residence that is regular, meaning on a valid residence card or a receipt for one.

Ask the police foreigners' service where you live which card fits you: work, family, studies or living on your own income. Law 02-03 also gives the resident card (carte de résidence) to people who have lived in Morocco habitually for more than fifteen years, subject to lawful entry and stay, so ask whether that applies to you.

If you are married to a Moroccan, you are entitled to the resident card as a spouse, subject to the same condition. Our Morocco marriage quiz covers it.
