Second Pass

Retirement in New Zealand

The Verdict: Need More Info

You can apply once you turn 66, if you meet the financial tests; there is no retirement visa before then. If you want residence sooner, look at Active Investor Plus, which has no age limit.

At 66 the Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa needs NZ$750,000 to invest, a separate NZ$500,000 to live on and NZ$60,000 a year in income. It is a temporary visa and never becomes residence.

Active Investor Plus grants residence with no age limit and no English requirement: NZ$5 million for 36 months with at least 21 days in New Zealand, or NZ$10 million for 60 months with 105 days. The Business Investor Work Visa starts at NZ$1 million into an existing business, for applicants aged 55 or younger.

A partner who is a New Zealand citizen or resident opens residence after twelve months of living together, with no financial test.
