Marriage in Poland

The Verdict: Not eligible

Marriage to a Polish citizen gives no route to citizenship from abroad; it opens only if you move to Poland. If you will not move, check our ancestry and diaspora routes for a claim of your own.

Article 5 of the Citizenship Act says marriage changes neither spouse's citizenship. The marriage route needs two years living in Poland on a permanent status, alongside three years of marriage.

If you do move, the ladder is a temporary residence permit as the spouse of a Polish citizen, then permanent residence once you have been married three years and held that permit for two, then citizenship two years later. Count four to five years in Poland from arrival.

A Polish parent or grandparent on your own side would put you on the ancestry or diaspora routes, and descent needs no residence at all.
