Naturalization in Poland

The Verdict: Unlikely

Recognition as a Polish citizen needs years of residence in Poland, so it is not open to you from abroad. Check our ancestry and diaspora routes if you have Polish family; otherwise look at skilled migration to move first.

Every limb of article 30 requires continuous residence in Poland on a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term resident permit or a permanent right of residence.

The only instrument without a residence condition is the President's grant under article 18. It has no conditions and no appeal, and grants have collapsed: from January to early February 2026, 445 applications produced 25 grants and 18 refusals, against 999 grants in 2025. It is reported as deliberate policy since the change of president in August 2025. It is worth knowing about, not planning around.

The diaspora route gives a person of Polish origin permanent residence on arrival and citizenship a year later. Without Polish family, the realistic path is a work or business permit, then permanent residence.
