Had that person been living in mainland Portugal, Madeira or the Azores for five years or more by 25 April 1974?

This is the test the 1975 decree used. Those who met it kept Portuguese nationality through independence; those who did not lost it automatically, and there is no reacquisition route for that loss. Portuguese documents issued to the person after 1975 are usually the quickest evidence of which side of the line they fell on.
