Portugal — Reacquiring Lost Citizenship

If nothing ever caused a loss, this is not a reacquisition at all — it is a claim that has never been made, and that is a different and usually better process.
Portuguese nationality is not lost by living abroad, by never holding a Portuguese passport, or by never having registered anything. Since October 1981 it is not lost by acquiring another nationality either. The only route to loss is a deliberate declaration, or one of the historical rules — marriage before 1981, or decolonisation in 1975.
So the question becomes whether you already hold it. If a parent was Portuguese when you were born, you are Portuguese from birth and what you need is a transcription of your birth into the Portuguese civil register — no test, no residence requirement, at any age. If the connection is a grandparent, it is a claim rather than a registration, and since 19 May 2026 it carries language and integration tests.
Start with the register: the central registry in Lisbon can confirm whether your ancestor — and whether you — appear in it. Then take the descent route rather than this one, because the documents and the process are different.
