Portugal — Skilled Migration

Likely

A transfer within your own company is its own route in Portuguese law, and it is designed to be quicker than starting from scratch.

The intra-company transfer regime covers a manager, a specialist or a graduate trainee moving temporarily from a company outside the EU to a company in the same group established in Portugal. You will need an existing employment relationship with the sending company, a transfer assignment letter setting out the role, the duration and the terms, and evidence that the two entities belong to the same group. The permit issued is an ICT permit, and there is a parallel arrangement for people already holding an ICT permit in another member state who are moving on to Portugal.

There is also a lighter option worth checking if the assignment is short: a temporary-stay visa exists for transfers in the context of providing services or professional training, for periods under a year, which avoids the residence-permit system entirely.

What happens next: the application is made at the consulate covering where you live, with your employer providing most of the documents. On arrival you attend the AIMA appointment scheduled with the visa and receive the permit.

One thing to raise with your employer early: whether the intention is a temporary assignment or a permanent move. If it is permanent, an ordinary work permit — or the highly qualified route if the salary clears one and a half times the national average — is usually a better foundation, because the ICT permit is built around the assignment and the time limits that come with it.
