The Verdict: Need More Info
This turns on confirming which relative was South African and checking each birth down the line. Start with family documents: a South African birth certificate, ID or passport, and any record of another nationality and its date.
The test applies one birth at a time: a person is a citizen by birth if one parent was a citizen on the day they were born. There is no generational limit, so a great-grandparent's citizenship can reach you if every link held.
Lines usually fail because someone renounced, or took another nationality before 6 October 1995, before the next child was born. Taking another nationality on or after that date no longer counts: the Constitutional Court struck that rule down in 2025.
Home Affairs and the National Archives hold South African birth, marriage and death records. Once you can name the person and the dates, take this quiz again.
