Naturalization in South Africa

The Verdict: Unlikely

Naturalisation needs years of living in South Africa, so from abroad it is a long shot. Check Citizenship by Descent and Reacquiring Lost Citizenship first: either may show you are South African already.

The requirement is permanent residence plus five years' ordinary residence immediately before applying, with no year over 90 days abroad. There is no consular version. The Minister can waive residence in exceptional circumstances, but the names are tabled in Parliament each year.

If one of your parents was a South African citizen when you were born, you are a citizen by birth. And if you lost South African citizenship by taking another nationality on or after 6 October 1995, the Constitutional Court ruled in May 2025 that you never lost it.

If you want to move, start with a route to permanent residence: Skilled Migration, Exceptional Talent, Retirement, Golden Visa or Marriage.
