The reduced requirement is one year of legal residence in Spain. It has to be residence under a permit, it has to be continuous, and it has to run immediately before you apply — and apart from one narrow exception for diplomatic postings, it has to be served inside Spain. Time on a student permit does not count, because Spanish law treats that as a stay rather than a residence.
