You are living in Spain, but for naturalisation purposes your clock has not started, and this is the single most common misunderstanding on this route.
Spanish law distinguishes a stay from a residence. A student permit is legally a stay — the 2024 regulation renamed it and made it much easier to convert, but left its legal character unchanged — and the courts have repeatedly and consistently held that time on one does not count as the legal residence naturalisation requires. Four years of study in Spain, however continuous, contributes nothing to the ten or two years you need.
The clock starts when you convert to an actual residence permit. That is genuinely achievable from where you are: the rules now allow a student to move to a work and residence permit without returning to their home country, and a graduate with a job offer is in a good position to do it. Self-employment and entrepreneurship routes are also open.
Once you have converted, the wait depends on your nationality of origin. If you are a national of a Latin American country, Andorra, Portugal, the Philippines or Equatorial Guinea, it is two years from conversion. For everyone else it is ten. Either way the practical advice is the same and it is worth acting on now rather than at the end of your course: convert as early as the rules allow, because every month as a student is a month the clock is not running.
