Spain — Skilled Migration

Likely

Being moved by an employer you already work for is one of the smoother ways into Spain, and it has a route built for it.

The intra-company transfer authorisation covers someone moving to a Spanish entity within the same company or corporate group, as a manager, a specialist, or a trainee. The EU form applies where you are moving from an entity outside the EU and carries maximum durations — three years for managers and specialists, one year for trainees — and lets you work in other member states' group entities during its validity. The national form covers cases outside that, and lasts three years or the length of the transfer.

What has to be shown: that the business and the group genuinely operate; that you hold a higher qualification or three years of equivalent experience; that you have worked for the group for at least three months continuously before the transfer; and documentation of the transfer itself. The three-month requirement is the one that occasionally catches a new hire being sent straight over.

Your employer handles the application through the specialist unit, and if the company is registered with that unit as a large or strategic employer, some evidential requirements are lighter still. It is worth asking your HR team whether the company holds that registration, because it changes the paperwork significantly.

Time on this authorisation counts as legal residence towards citizenship. If you expect to stay beyond the transfer, it is worth planning the move to another permit before the maximum duration runs out rather than at the end.
