The Verdict: Need More Info
Being married to a Thai citizen gives you a much shorter road than ordinary naturalisation. Take our marriage quiz, and first make sure the marriage is registered in Thailand.
Ordinary naturalisation needs five years of permanent residence, and permanent residence itself needs three years of extensions, a place in a quota of about 100 per nationality a year, and one to two years for a decision.
A foreign woman married to a Thai man can apply for nationality directly under section 9, with no permanent residence. A foreign man married to a Thai woman must naturalise, but is excused permanent residence after about three years on marriage-based extensions.
For same-sex spouses the marriage visa is settled, but whether the nationality rules reach them is untested. If the marriage route does not fit, ordinary naturalisation is still there behind it.
