Skilled Migration in Thailand

The Verdict: Unlikely

Thailand has no visa to come and look for work, so without a job offer this route is a long shot for now. Aim your search at BOI-promoted companies and firms that already employ foreigners.

There is no points system, jobseeker visa or shortage list. Every work route starts with a specific employer sponsoring a specific permit. An ordinary Thai company must hold THB 2 million of paid-up capital and employ four Thai staff on social security for each foreign work permit, retested at every yearly extension. Companies promoted by the Board of Investment (BOI), and Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa holders, are outside that rule. So small employers cannot sponsor you, however keen.

The LTR Highly-Skilled Professional visa takes you outside the rule yourself, if you earn USD 80,000 a year (or USD 40,000 with a science or technology master's) in a BOI targeted industry. Our talent quiz covers it. It also makes you far easier to hire.

Check your actual duties against Thailand's restricted occupations list. 27 occupations are closed to foreigners outright and 13 more are conditional. A work permit cannot authorise a prohibited one, and doing the work anyway risks up to five years in prison, fines and deportation.

This is the ordinary road to a Thai passport. Three unbroken years of yearly extensions lets you apply for permanent residence, and five years of permanent residence opens naturalisation.
