How long ago was the wedding or civil union?

For couples living outside Italy the term runs from the date of the marriage itself, and it is halved where the couple have children together, born or adopted. If you married outside Italy, note that offices count from the date the marriage was registered with the Italian comune, which can be much later than the wedding.
