This is the second of the two situations where Spain does actually grant nationality by royal decree, and yours may fall within it.
Spanish nationality can be granted for exceptional circumstances at the government's discretion. Alongside elite sport, the clearest recent pattern has been people who have been deprived of their own nationality by their government, or left stateless — Spain granted nationality to a substantial number of Nicaraguans stripped of their citizenship, and has used the route in comparable cases.
It is a political decision rather than a legal test, which cuts both ways. There is no threshold you can satisfy on paper and no appeal on the merits. But it also means the route can respond to a situation quickly when the government chooses to, which the ordinary rules cannot.
There is a separate and more reliable path worth knowing about in parallel. Spain has a formal statelessness recognition procedure, and separately, someone granted refugee status qualifies for naturalisation after five years of legal residence rather than ten. Those are rights-based rather than discretionary, so they do not depend on political attention. For most people in this position, the protection route is the one to pursue first and the carta de naturaleza is the thing to hope for rather than plan around.
