Spain — Reacquiring Lost Citizenship

Spanish nationality can end in several ways and they lead to genuinely different procedures. The most common is taking another nationality. The next most common is one almost nobody knows about until it bites: someone born abroad to a Spanish parent who was also born abroad loses it automatically at twenty-one unless they declared, within three years of turning eighteen, that they wanted to keep it. No warning is given, and it usually comes to light at a passport renewal decades later. If you do not know which applies, say so — one document settles it.
